Green cleaning products lead to cost savings
Through a joint procurement process, Ottawa’s four school boards will be introducing green cleaning products into local schools.
The boards have been monitoring the development and cost of green cleaning products for several years. Recently, product testing and experience has demonstrated that these products are now equivalent in performance to traditional materials and may also be purchased at a competitive cost.
“I’m thrilled by our new green cleaning program,” says Catholic Trustee Stephen Blais. “In addition to helping protect the environment, and ensuring healthier schools, our board is also saving a substantial amount of money.”
The new products are biodegradable, environmentally friendly comprising low volatile organic compounds that will enhance school indoor air quality.
“Working collaboratively with other school boards to save money for tax payers as well as taking a more green approach to cleaning schools is win-win for everyone,” adds Public Trustee John Shea.
The Ottawa Catholic School Board is saving $10,000 by going green when compared to traditional cleaning products. The other boards are also expecting significant savings.
"This new green cleaning program encourages staff to consider the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions,” says Trustee Pierre Maheu.
Elementary schools in Orléans will be the first to benefit from this new green cleaning program with high school phased in later this spring.
