Municipal candidate asks for term limits

With the period of nominations just launched a week ago, an east-end candidate for the next municipal election is making its first promise: to self-impose a term limit of two mandates as a councillor.

Stephen Blais, candidate for Cumberland Ward, said Monday, Jan. 11 that this measure would be “an opportunity to bring new solutions to decade old problems."

“By self-imposing term-limits, I will only be focused on doing my job rather than trying to keep my job,” said Blais.

“If councillors know they only have two terms, they will be driven to make a difference for their community and city,” he added.

Councillors Steve Desroches (Gloucester-South Nepean) and Bob Monette (Orleans) have already made commitments to that effect. Both politicians said in 2006 that they would serve a maximum of two terms at city hall, if they were re-elected.

The current Cumberland Ward councillor, Rob Jellett, has yet to decide on its participation in the upcoming election. In 2006, Jellett was elected with 71.5% of the votes.
