Three city council contenders are promising to sit no more than two terms if elected, opening debate again over whether councillors should have a limit to how many years they can serve.

“Politics are more of a calling than a profession,” Mark Taylor said Monday as he joined fellow council hopefuls Stephen Blais and Allan Hubley in promising to serve a maximum of two terms if they win seats in Bay, Cumberland and Kanata South wards respectively.

“A fresh perspective is always good, new blood is always good,” Blais said.

By seeking election to city council with his bid to represent the people of Cumberland Ward at city hall, Stephen Blais firmly believes he has an opportunity to bring new solutions to decade old problems. Candidate Blais’ first initiative is a pledge to self-impose term limits.

“I believe in term-limits because serving the greater good of our city is more important than anyone’s desire to become a career politician”, said Cumberland Ward candidate Stephen Blais. “By self-imposing term-limits, I will only be focused on doing my job rather than trying to keep my job."

With the period of nominations just launched a week ago, an east-end candidate for the next municipal election is making its first promise: to self-impose a term limit of two mandates as a councillor.

Re: It's time to overhaul how we vote for school board trustees, March 13

I read with interest Ken Vowles' editorial regarding the election and salary of school trustees.

While I agree with Vowles that the remuneration for school trustees should never have been increased, as a former one-term member of Gloucester Council, I am surprised Vowles would call for an unelected school board since elections are the nucleus of a democracy.
