Despite City Hall’s refusal to partner with the Ontario government and Councillor Rob Jellett’s flip-flop on safety improvements to HWY 174, Cumberland Ward Candidate Stephen Blais is asking City Hall to come together with the provincial government for the betterment of East End commuters.

“I will be that East End champion that fights to get our fair share of investments to improve the safety and widening of HWY 174,” says Blais. “It’s clear that City Hall is once again not interested in fixing HWY 174 for our residents.”

East-end officials are once again stepping up to push for stronger measures against speeders around area schools, after city staff failed to get behind a previous effort this past spring.

As Orléans Coun. Bob Monette prepares to bring a motion asking the city to create community safety zones around local schools – which would allow for doubled speeding fines – to transportation committee later this month, he joined Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) trustee Stephen Blais outside Convent Glen Catholic School on Thursday, Aug. 27 to unveil a new speeding radar.

School board passes motion in support of tougher penalties

Orléans-Cumberland trustee Stephen Blais’ crusade to put a stop to speeders by doubling fines in school zones is one step closer to reaching its goal.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board is now putting the ball in the city’s court to implement the change, after a motion in support of increasing fines was passed without much debate during a Tuesday, April 14 meeting.

It's now up to council, says east end trustee

A motion put forth to the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) by Stephen Blais, Catholic school board trustee for Orléans-Cumberland, passed at a recent board meeting.

The motion, which targets speeders in school zones, was approved at the April 14th board meeting. Blais requested that the City of Ottawa implement community safety zones, under the Highway Traffic Act, in front of all elementary schools in Ottawa.

Speeders beware. One Ottawa Catholic School Board trustee is on a mission to see fines doubled for those putting the pedal to the metal near elementary schools.

Orléans-Cumberland Catholic trustee Stephen Blais’ motion is asking the City of Ottawa to implement community safety zones in a one-kilometre radius of all elementary schools.

Stephen Blais, Catholic school board trustee for Orléans-Cumberland, has requested that the City of Ottawa deal with the issue of speeding in front of schools in the National Capital Region.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, Blais is asking that the City implement community safety zones to help with speeding.

"I take the safety of our children very seriously, which is why I am requesting that the city employ the community safety zone to protect our children," he said. "By doubling the normal fine, along with aggressive enforcement, I hope to send a message to speeders that they are not wanted in our community."

Stephen Blais, Catholic school board trustee for Orléans-Cumberland, is urging the City of Ottawa to extensively look at placing a crossing guard at the intersection of Gardenway Drive and Thicket Way located in the Fallingbrook area.

On March 9th, a preliminary analysis of the area was done by the city for two hours, from 7 a.m to 9 a.m. City staff observed three children crossing the intersection.

City staff came back saying that the intersection did not warrant a crossing guard.

Orléans-Cumberland Catholic School Board trustee Stephen Blais is urging the city to reverse its decision not to fund a crossing guard at the Fallingbrook intersection of Gardenway Drive and Thicket Way.

“Parents have serious safety concerns about their children walking to school every morning,” Blais said in a released statement. “The city’s lack of leadership in ensuring the safety of children is troubling.”
