Going Green

Catholic Trustee Stephen Blais is applauding local schools for the success of the Catholic School Board’s energy management plan that has saved taxpayers more than $2.2 million in energy costs this year. In the third year of their energy management plan the Ottawa Catholic School Board has announced it has avoided $2,285,550 in energy costs for 2008-2009.

“The Catholic school board is leading the way in energy efficient,” says Catholic Trustee Stephen Blais. “In the past four years we have saved more than $7.5 million – money we’ve been able to reinvest into the classroom.”

Green cleaning products lead to cost savings

Through a joint procurement process, Ottawa’s four school boards will be introducing green cleaning products into local schools.

The boards have been monitoring the development and cost of green cleaning products for several years. Recently, product testing and experience has demonstrated that these products are now equivalent in performance to traditional materials and may also be purchased at a competitive cost.

As the season’s chilly weather sends thermostats skyrocketing, three east-end schools have been recognized by their board for cutting back on energy costs.

St. Matthew Catholic High School, St. Clare Catholic School and Divine Infant Catholic School are among the 20 schools being honoured by the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) for meeting or exceeding the board’s energy management plan target reductions, explains Orléans-Cumberland trustee Stephen Blais, with each receiving $500 to funnel back in to sustainable programming or projects.

In the wake of the Fecal-gate revelations at Petrie Island what measures are going to be taken to punish those individuals responsible for this cover-up and ensure this debacle doesn’t happen again?

In my opinion, someone needs to be held accountable for this cover up since people’s health and quality of life were put at severe risk.

With one successful east-end spring cleaning campaign already completed, two more area groups are gearing up to tidy their neighbourhoods this weekend. As part of the citywide Spring Clean the Capital campaign – a month-long event taking place between April 15 and May 15 – the Heart of Orléans BIA took to the streets on Saturday, April 26 to spruce up the community.
